The History of the J.C.C.A.B.C. To Date:

The JCCABC has been involved in organizing a variety of social functions, and events, as well as hosting such Jamaican dignitaries as the Hon. Maxine Henry Wilson, Minister of Information, the Hon. Birchell Whiteman, Minister of Education and Culture, his Excellency Raymond Wolfe, High Commissioner of Jamaica in Canada, and most recently the Hon. Portia Simpson, Minister of Tourism and Sports. We have been active supporters of various events held by other Caribbean Associations, and have worked in collaboration with members of these organizations to establish a unified Association. This association was registered in July 2000 as the British Columbia Organization of Caribbean Cultural Associations (BCOCCA). We have been active participants in various community events including, Kaleidoscope, held in Richmond , “Eracism … New Beginning's,” and Langley School Board's Multicultural Festival in which we displayed, and promoted Jamaican Culture. In an effort to display some of Jamaica 's talented individuals, we brought a Jamaican play from Toronto entitled “Country Duppy”, starring Leonie Forbes, and continued with a “Local Talent Fund raiser” which focused on individuals of all ages. Another successful fund raising event was JCCABCs first annual walk-a-thon where, here again, it was fun for all ages. Providing the public, in general, and the Jamaican community in particular with avenues/opportunities for togetherness, will greatly benefit our Community because “in unity there is strength”.

National Flower - Lignum Vitae

Lignum Vitae (Guiacum officinale) is indigenous to Jamaica and was found here by Christopher Columbus. It is thought that the name "Wood of Life" was then adopted because of its medicinal qualities.

The tree grows best in the dry woodlands along both the North and South coasts of the island. In addition to shedding an attractive blue flower, the plant itself is extremely ornamental. The wood is widely used in the manufacture of propeller shaft bearings for ships, as well as in the creation of curios, sought after by visitors and nationals alike.
